Read with Me: Poets.org Poem-a-Day

One of the best resources I’ve found for getting a glimpse of what poets are doing today, especially up-and-coming poets, is the Poem-a-Day email sent out by the Academy of American Poets (poets.org). During weekdays, poems are chosen by that month’s guest editor, and Saturday and Sunday feature work that’s in the public domain. The new poems are consistently challenging, compelling, and energetic. The older poems are sometimes by familiar poets usually from the 19th or early 20th century like Christina Rossetti or Carl Sandburg, but there are often older poems by names I’ve never heard translated from other languages. Taken all together, it makes for a nice mix of the fresh and contemporary contrasted against poems that spring from older ways of looking at the world.

Join me for one week of reading the Poem-a-Day and we’ll see what we find. What might happen if you closely read a poem every day?
